How Personalised Gifts Are Made: The Print-on-Demand Process Explained

When you order a personalised gift from Wild Thread Co, nothing is sitting in a warehouse waiting for you. Your product is made specifically for your order — printed, packed, and dispatched. This is print-on-demand, and it works differently from most retail.

Here's how the process works, from the moment you place an order to the moment it arrives at your door.

Step 1: The Design

Every product in our range is an original illustration — created in-house, not stock art. Each design is crafted specifically for the product it goes on. A mug design is sized and formatted for a 11oz ceramic. An art print design is created at full print resolution. A t-shirt design is built for DTG printing on fabric.

No design is printed until an order is placed.

Step 2: Your Order Triggers Production

When you place an order, it goes directly to our UK fulfilment partner. They receive the order details, the design file, and your delivery address. Production begins within one business day.

This is the fundamental difference between print-on-demand and traditional retail. There's no warehouse of unsold mugs. No surplus t-shirts going to clearance. Every item produced has already been sold.

Step 3: Printing by Product Type

Mugs and Ceramics

Our ceramic mugs use dye-sublimation printing. The design is printed onto transfer paper at high temperature and pressure, which fuses the ink permanently into the ceramic surface. The result is a print that won't fade, peel, or crack — dishwasher safe and designed for daily use over years.

Art Prints and Framed Prints

Our art prints are produced on 200gsm enhanced matte paper using professional inkjet printing with archival pigment inks. Archival inks are formulated to resist UV fading — the kind of inks used in fine art reproduction, not the cheap dye inks in a consumer printer. The result is a print that stays true to the original design on a wall for years.

Framed prints use the same print quality, mounted in a solid wooden frame with plexiglass front.

T-Shirts and Hoodies

Our t-shirts and hoodies use direct-to-garment (DTG) printing. Unlike screen printing (which requires a separate screen per colour and setup per design), DTG prints ink directly onto the fabric surface using a process similar to a high-quality inkjet printer designed for textiles. The result is a soft-feel print with the full detail of the original illustration. Wash-fast and durable — designed to survive regular machine washing at 30°C.

Tote Bags

Our cotton tote bags are printed using the same DTG process as our apparel — ink directly into the cotton canvas weave. Machine washable. Robust enough for a full weekly shop.

Step 4: Quality Check and Dispatch

Every order passes through a quality check before dispatch. Production time is typically 2–5 business days. You receive a shipping confirmation email with a tracking number as soon as your order leaves the facility.

Why Print-on-Demand Is Better for the Environment

Traditional retail involves forecasting demand, manufacturing in bulk, and hoping the forecast is right. When it isn't — which is most of the time in the gift industry — the surplus is discounted, warehoused, or destroyed. In the clothing industry alone, billions of unsold garments end up in landfill every year.

Print-on-demand produces nothing until there's a confirmed order. No overproduction. No deadstock. No surplus. Our UK fulfilment partner also means shorter supply chains and lower transport emissions than products manufactured and shipped from overseas.

It's not a perfect system — every manufactured product has an environmental cost. But compared to the traditional retail model, it is measurably better.

Quality You Can Trust

Because every product is made specifically for your order, there's no compromise on quality for the sake of bulk production speed. Our printing partners are professional-grade facilities producing thousands of products per day to consistent standards. If anything isn't right — a print defect, a damaged item — we replace it. No questions, no return required.
